Costco Price List Vs. Grocery Store Price List
Last week, I shared a spreadsheet that detailed prices of common organic store brand products like butter, eggs, bread, milk, soy milk, flour and sugar from main grocery stores like Kroger, Meijer, Trader Joe’s, Target and Whole Foods. It showed that overall, Meijer was the cheapest in these categories and Trader Joe’s was, surprisingly, the highest.
I recently joined Costco and was curious to compare their prices on these products to the prices at the above grocery stores. I assumed they would be the lowest in every category, so I was surprised to see how high they compared in one specific category. I was also disappointed to see that they do not sell whole wheat flour, so I was unable to compare this price.

Costco came in lower than the cheapest price at the grocery stores by $.29 in the bread category, $.54 less for butter, $.69 less for eggs, $.44 less for soy milk and $.79 less for sugar. In my opinion, in addition to the lowest prices on organic meats that Costco offers, it is definitely worth a membership if you consume these products regularly.
You may want to buy your organic milk elsewhere as Costco was way out of the ballpark at $1.34 higher per gallon than the lowest price at the grocery stores.
Keep in mind, these items are sold in bulk, so with items like eggs and butter, you’ll want to make sure you’ll really use these before they expire.
Here are some tips for prolonging the life of these items:
- Bread: Freeze for up to a year before before or at expiration date.
- Butter: Freeze for up to a year before or at expiration date.
- Eggs: Cook a large batch of hard boiled eggs if you are near or at the expiration date and put in salads, eat for breakfast, make egg salad, etc.
- Soy milk: Costco sells the shelf-stable vanilla soy milk in bulk, so the expiration date should be long enough.
Keep in mind, that couponing for staple food name brand products, can often save you even more over buying store brand.
