Every year my husband and I like to go apple picking at the orchard. Because of the early frost, we weren’t able to last year, so we haven’t yet gone with our almost two year old son. We like to pick several bushels of apples at the end of the season, when the prices are marked down and take a day to peel and freeze them.
We haven’t made it there yet this year, but I did get a really good deal on apples at Aldi, so we made a large batch of applesauce together. I thought my son would be bored with the peeling process, but he loved helping daddy turn the peeler over and over! We made a mess as we peeled so that probably helped make it more fun for him. 🙂
I created this applesauce recipe as an alternative to sugar-filled recipes and bland sugar-free recipes. The amount of stevia used really brings out the natural apple flavor (I use this stevia powdered extract found here). Most people that try it aren’t even aware that there isn’t any sugar in it. Plus, by cooking it in the crock pot, it makes the house smell A-MAZING!
Normally, homemade applesauce can be a pain, but this recipe is super easy. I highly recommend an all-in-one apple peeler that also slices and cores, like this one found here. That will make the job much easier on you (and your little ones may even help)!
