With mainstream stores like Target, Meijer and Kroger coming out with their own line of natural and organic products, I was curious how their prices compared to established health food stores like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. I searched through these 5 stores and compared their store brand prices on the following main food staples: bread, butter, eggs, flour, milk, soy milk and sugar. I was very surprised by the results! Check out what I found:
Surprisingly, the store that offered the lowest price in the most categories was Meijer! Kroger didn’t do too bad either on their prices. I’m excited that more mainstream stores are coming out with affordable, organic products. I’m glad Target has joined in with offering organic products, but it looks like they need to work on their prices. Target is competitive when there are Target coupons available on these products.
The next chart will highlight the highest prices:
I was shocked to see that Trader Joe’s was priced highest in nearly every category! When I think of Trader Joe’s, I automatically assume they are the cheapest, so this came as a surprise. Also, Kroger, Meijer, Target and Whole Foods all offer coupons periodically on their store organic brand, where as Trader Joe’s does not.
I think there is a misconception that Whole Foods is super expensive. Their store brand is competitively priced for the most part. Even better, their Whole Food store coupons that can be stacked with manufacturer coupons make for really cheap deals on organic food.
What are YOUR thoughts on the results? Will this affect where you shop?
