Ever since the acquisition of Whole Foods by Amazon, Amazon has said that they are working on a rewards program for Amazon Prime members, for discounts at Whole Foods. The waiting is finally over, as Amazon has just rolled out it’s new Whole Foods reward’s program!
Effective now, Florida Whole Foods stores are now offering up 10% off discounts on hundreds of items each week for Amazon Prime members. Just download the Whole Foods app and show the barcode at checkout. I downloaded the app, and it’s handy to have as they also list some of the items that you can receive a discount on.
Now, these discounts are only available for Prime members, and you must download the Whole Foods app and show the barcode in order to get the discount. Only Florida stores qualify currently, but they will roll this program out nationwide over the summer.
The closest Whole Foods to me is about an hour away, so I go once a month and stock up on the items I can only find there, and not locally. I’m in Florida, so I took a trip yesterday, curious to check out their new deals. Their sales are about the same as before, the only difference is now Prime members get another 10% off all of their sale items. There was one extra Prime deal, where Prime members could get organic strawberries for $2.99 lb. (vs. regular price of $4.99). This was a pretty good deal, but Publix was $3.49 lb. last week, so nothing spectacular. I spent $200 on groceries and after the Prime discounts I saved $5.17. I was pretty disappointed. This program replaces their previous Whole Foods store coupons. On an average trip before, using their store coupons, I probably would have saved $50 or more off of that size order, so $5 savings is pretty small.
You can still use manufacturer coupons, so if you stick to only buying sale items that have a matchable manufacturer coupon, you can save more, but I do hope that they’ll add more benefits in the future and consider bringing their store coupons back.
I will still go there monthly as they have the lowest base price (in my area) on organic orange juice, organic, grass-fed roasts, So Delicious coconut milk, Vegan cheeses and other staples my family eats regularly. Next trip, I’m going to try to combine more manufacturer coupons with their sale prices and see how I fare.
What are your thoughts on the new Prime discounts at Whole Foods?
If you’re not a Prime member, but you are a frequent Whole Foods shopper, you may consider signing up either for a year membership or monthly. You can sign up for a free 30 day trial here.
I was looking at this the other day. Not worth the drive for me when, like you said, Publix and places like Loves Whole Food by us have the same prices. I would spend the 10% I’d save in gas getting there.
I have to drive over an hour to get to the closest Whole Foods as well, but I probably only go a couple times a year. We do have an Earth Fare, but I find their sales are not very competitive and my store is not very coupon friendly. I buy everything online except for produce, meat, eggs, etc. That being said, I would shop at Whole Foods a lot for fruits and vegetables if we had one because organic is kind of hard to come by sometimes where I live.
I also thought I would mention that I remember getting an email a while back that said you get an additional 5% back at Whole Foods and Amazon if you have an Amazon Prime Rewards Visa. That might be enough of a discount to make it worthwhile. I’ve actually already had this card for years, but I haven’t had a chance to use it at Whole Foods yet.
I preferred the store coupons along with case discounts, app coupons etc.
Recently I was advised Whole Foods will no longer be offering a 10% discount when buying a case of anything. I wasn’t happy about that.
Prime membership will go up soon, so not much savings there.
