Ever get a headache when walking past the perfume counters in the store? That’s just one response to the toxic overload most perfumes are made of. Thankfully, there are safer options in non-toxic perfumes.
Why? Perfumes are loaded with toxins containing xenoestrogens. As I’ve pointed out in past Simple Swaps, xenoestrogens wreak havoc on your body’s hormonal levels. They cause dangerous levels of estrogen in the body causing problems for men and women. In women, it’s a common cause of breast cancer, menopausal symptoms, PMS and other hormonal disorders, weight gain, anxiety and other mood disorders. In men, it causes hormonal imbalances such as low testosterone. Perfumes also contain toxins that suppress the thryoid, causing weight gain, depression, and blood sugar imbalances.
Perfumes are not regulated by the FDA like foods are (and even food regulation is questionable), so companies can virtually put any chemical in your perfume without having to disclose it!
What seems as simple as spraying on a nice smelling perfume each day, can cause severe health problems for you and your family. Babies exposed to these perfumes (by snuggling with mom or just being around her) can have allergic reactions, colic, and developmental delays.
Swapping Frugally: The first all-natural perfume I tried was LaVanila and I fell in love! I haven’t tried any others because this was the most affordable and I love the smell. I use Lavanila Roller Perfume which you can get on Amazon for just $19 with FREE shipping. I’ve had mine for almost two years and haven’t gone through it yet (I don’t wear it daily). It last quite awhile. A 1.7 oz. LaVanila spray costs about $59 on Amazon, but if you shop on Ebay, you can get the price down to about $39.
There are also organic perfumes available such as Urban Organic, Red Flower Ambrette and Tallulah Jane Aiyana, if you don’t mind spending a little more.

Great topic that deserves refreshing! I don’t think many people realize how wonderful natural perfume smells compared to the chemical stuff. One more to add to the list ~ Drift Perfume. Handcrafted solid perfumes in *wooden* cases. NO synthetic ingredients. And, we sell samples 🙂
