Question:
What’s the difference between organic beef and grass-fed (not organic) beef? Is one better than the other? -Sarah
Here’s my two cents:
If the beef is labeled organic, but does not specify that it is grass fed (and finished) it’s likely raised on grains, like corn and soy. While the corn and soy they are fed is organic, it still affects the composition of the fatty acids. Grain fed cows have lower levels of omega-3s, and their meat contains more fat.
Grass fed beef, is the best choice as long as it specifies the cow is grass fed and grass finished. There is some gmo grass floating around out there, so the absolute best choice would be grass-fed, finished, organic beef to insure there were no pesticides or gmo grass used. I buy organic, grass fed/finished beef at Aldi for $6.99 lb.
What are your thoughts? What beef do you prefer and where do you find the best deals?? Do you purchase beef in-store or do you buy from a local farmer? Just add your comment below.
Agreed with the “two cents” above 😀 We prefer grassfed, grass (or silage) finished raised locally by farmers we trust to care for the animals . In SE Michigan we buy beef, pork, chicken and turkey from John Henry’s. They do monthly or biweekly delivery to your door of frozen meat (and eggs and cheese). We pay $6.19 a lb for grassfed and finished ground chuck in one pound packages. They also sell at farmer’s markets around the metro area and are just the nicest family! Ordering meat monthly has helped a lot with meal planning and limiting trips to the store.
