I’ve been very concerned since CFL light bulbs have come out about the affect of the mercury it contains, in our homes and environment. With incandescent bulbs being taken off of the shelves, we were being pushed to purchase these mercury-containing light bulbs. That’s why I was so excited to see that GE is offering an alternative, halogen light bulbs.
Why? CFL light bulbs contain mercury, a hazardous substance that can cause major health problems when you come in contact with it (including contact through a heated light bulb emitting the substance in the room). A Stony Brook University study showed that these bulbs emit harmful ultraviolet radiation that could burn skin and skin cells and cause melanoma.
Thankfully, there is now an eco-friendly alternative. I was provided with a 4-pack of GE Reveal halogen lightbulbs free of charge to do my own room makeover. I’m pleased to see that not only are these bulbs safer than CFLs, but they also use less energy than an incandescent bulb and really did wonders for the lighting in our bedroom! Before, our bedroom lighting was pretty dark and depressing. With the GE halogen light bulbs, it really brightened up our bedroom and made it more cheery (even the room’s paint color stood out more with the new bulbs). My GE Reveal light bulb worked well for close to 3 years. It is in my son’s bedroom and he is almost 3. However it spontaneously exploded today. Thankfully no one was in the room. Glass went about 12 feet into the hallway and everywhere in his room.
