Like many of the other swaps, vanilla is an easy swap as you don’t have to change the way you bake or cook, the product you’re used to just needs some tweaking.
Why? Most “vanillas” on the market today don’t even contain any real vanilla. They are made out of a synthetic, cheaper substance. In order to add flavor, chemicals and synthetic flavors are added as well as unnecessary (and usually GMO) sugar. Finally, to prolong the shelf-life, chemical preservatives that are known to cause health problems are then added. Fortunately, there is a better option. Look for vanillas labeled “pure” or “organic”. Pure vanilla not only adds flavor to baked goods, it’s also good for you. Vanilla has been proven to reduce anxiety, aid in weight loss and help with nausea. Read the label to be sure that the only ingredients are pure vanilla, water and alcohol.
Swapping frugally: A few of my favorites are also budget-friendly: Trader Joe’s Pure Bourbon Vanilla Extract and Meijer Organics Vanilla Extract. Simply Organic also makes an organic vanilla and can often be found on sale and paired with a coupon found on their site. Amazon also sells Simply Organic Pure Vanilla Extract Certified Organic, 4-Ounce Glass Bottle at a discounted price.
