I’m always trying to reevaluate our organic grocery spending to make sure we are getting the most bang for our buck. For awhile, we were on a sandwich kick. Who doesn’t love lunchmeat? I knew it wasn’t the healthiest option, but it was easy and we were still buying organic.
I never really thought about how much I was actually spending per pound on organic lunch meat. I’d wait for a sale and use a coupon and usually pay about $5.49 for a pack of organic lunch meat. One day I did the math. Each package came with 6 oz. of lunch meat. That means I was paying $14.60 for organic lunch meat! If I didn’t catch a sale or have a coupon, I was paying an average of $6.99 per package of organic lunch meat, so $18.59 lb.! I should have been eating organic steak for the price I was paying!
Even by buying “natural” lunch meat, I’d still be paying an average of $7-$8 lb. which is higher than what I can get organic, unprocessed meat for.
Generally, I pay around $5.99 for organic chicken breasts and $6.99 lb. for organic grass-fed beef. I was paying over double that for organic processed lunch meat!
Still, lunch meat is super handy and quick. So, I got to thinking on how I could still have the convenience without the super high price tag. Now, instead of buying lunch meat at a ridiculous price per pound, I grill up a huge pack of organic chicken breasts, and dice them up to use in sandwiches in place of lunch meat or make a large batch of chicken salad for sandwiches. We also cook and freeze large batches of taco-seasoned organic ground beef for a quick taco lunch.
So, not only is it healthier, but switching from natural and organic lunch meats to real, organic meats cooked and prepared ahead, can save you over 50% off of that portion of your organic grocery bill.
Which organic products have you noticed have made a dent in your grocery bill?
Great ideas! The Costco in my area just started selling organic turkey lunch meat for $10.89 for 20oz!!!! Best deal I’ve ever seen!
Oh, great to hear! I’ve been looking for it at Costco, I’ll have to check again!
